The library of things
What is the Library of Things?
The Hudson Area Public Library tagline is: “Where books are just the beginning,” and we mean that! The library has over a hundred non-traditional items available for checkout. This unique collection is called the Library of Things, and it has four main categories: Adult Kits, Children’s Kits, Lawn Games, and Technology.
You can explore the Library of Things online in the MORE catalog, here on the website, and in person.
Adult Kits
From fondue pots to stamping sets, the adult kit section of the Library of Things has a wide array of items to check out. Try something before you buy it (example: embossing machine), learn a new skill (wood burning set), or use a seasonal tool you rarely need (holiday bakeware). Make book club easy with our book discussion kits, and branch out your gardening by perusing the seed catalog.
Adult kits are kept upstairs at the front of the adult non-fiction area.
Book discussion kits are kept upstairs in the back of the adult non-fiction area.
The Seed Library catalog is located upstairs at the Adult Information desk.
Children's Kits
Learn and play with one of our many kits for kids! Items range from learning tools, like coding skills and phonics kits, to building blocks like LEGOs and Duplos, to popular games like Apples to Apples and Throw Throw Burrito. American Girl dolls, kinetic sand, and even county park passes are all available for checkout.
Most children’s kits hang on the wall around the elevator in the children’s area.
Phonics kits are on top of the Early Reader shelves.
Baby Storytime kits hang on the wall by the Storytime Room.
Lawn Games
Looking to change up your outdoor activities? Bring a giant version of Connect 4 or toppling tower blocks to the cabin one weekend! Test out popular, newer games like Slammo or Flickin’ Chicken at your next backyard party, or stick to classics like horseshoes and lawn bowling.
Lawn Games are stored in a staff area and can be checked out at the circulation desk on the main floor after signing a waiver.
Technology
Fun to useful to everything in between! Check out invaluable tech like Wi-Fi hot spots and Chromebooks. Access a variety of streaming services on a Roku device. Introduce new skills to outdoor time with a metal detector or geocache GPS. Test out the popular smart cutting device, Cricut, or snag a projector for movie night. You can even check your home for air quality and energy usage. The possibilities are endless.
Technology items are kept behind the main circulation desk and can be checked out after signing a waiver.
